live at city hall to explain how this may be planting the seed for a future recall against sheriff ross mirkarimi. >> reporter: good afternoon. that's right. there's actually a meeting being held now in the mayor's office at city hall. it's about the citywide effort to stop domestic violence called peace at home. it's about putting up billboards, bus ads, talking about putting a stop to this. folks like the mayor and the district attorney, who are actually heading this meeting, have been talking a lot recently about curbing ross mirkarimi's power on different domestic violence issues and some people have actually gone even further than that. check out this website. this is rossresign.org an online petition calling on the san francisco sheriff to step down and avoid a costly recall effort. they want 50,000 signatures. right before this meeting started, we talked to the president of the board of supervisors and the district attorney. they say this is about turning around a bad trend, not the embattled sheriff. we specifically asked george gascon if he had an opinion about the petition. >>

' families. >> i want closure. >> reporter: but closure for the families of deborah ross and ersie everette known as chuck will have to wait. the judge has reaskedded the official sentence -- rescheduled the official sentencing of the killer nathan burris until january 18. they were gunned down at the richmond/san rafael tollbooth in 2009. burris was ross' ex-boyfriend the sentencing was supposed to happen today after a jury handed down the death penalty back in november. family members were prepared to read victim impact statements but instead, it was burris and his advisory counsel who spoke asking for a new date. burris represents himself and says the sheriff's department revoked his pro per leaving him without access to a library or any way to research and prepare. >> to me, it's a joke now. he's a joke. you know? he is trying to do anything he can to stay in the county jail. >> we are used to his antics now, you know, we kind of expect something he is going to do something. you kind of roll with the punches. but the main thing is that we know this is coming to an end. we know that we'r

of san rafael ran down from a dui check point in ross yesterday morning. he was later seen in the creek there near the college of marin. police tried to coax him out of the creek but he swam away and out of sight and they haven't found him since. >>> street racing may be to blame for a crash that critically injured a man in vallejo. he was hit by a crash yesterday afternoon. police say the driver then took off. witnesses told officers two cars were racing at the time. and investigators are now looking for a black 1990s honda sieving that has some front end damage. >>> and two people are displaced after a cooking fire got out of hand in a menlo park apartment. check it out. the fire on role afghan just before 7:00 yesterday evening and investigators say the grease fire quickly spread to the ceiling. the apartment and a neighboring unit were damaged and nobody injured though. total damage is estimated at about $50,000. >>> the spirit of christmas is alive and well here in san francisco this morning. >> it's that annual tradition volunteers are up early to help the less fortunate. an
